Vaiyankara Chira Eco-Tourism Center

A New Signature in Kerala's Green Tourism Map

Located at the southernmost tip of Alappuzha district, bordering Kollam and Pathanamthitta, Vaiyankara Chira is one of Kerala’s premier natural tourist destinations. This expansive 110-acre water body has been transformed into a scenic, hygienic, and eco-friendly hub under the joint leadership of the Thamarakulam Grama Panchayat and the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC).

📢 Officially declared a certified "Green Tourism Center" on November 1, 2024, emphasizing biodiversity, sustainable water conservation, and strict eco-regulations.

⏳ Historical Evolution & Milestones

 

2004 — Tourism Package Inclusion

Included in the State Chira Tourism Package via public petition under the tenure of then Tourism Minister Shri. K.C. Venugopal.

 

2010 - 2018 — Central Mega Tourism Funding (Phase I)

Through the efforts of Mavelikkara MP Shri. Kodikunnil Suresh, the Central Government allotted ₹25,95,200/- under the Mega Tourism Project. Phase 1 wrapped up in 2018, delivering an entrance gate, sidewalk paved seating, decorative path-lighting, toilets, a viewpoint, and a children's park.

 

2021 — Power Grid Activation

The Panchayat Administrative Committee powered the site with formal electrical grid infrastructure and standardized routine premises upkeep.

 

September 2024 — Commercial Launch & DTPC Administration

The destination officially opened to the general public with commercial eco-activities managed via private enterprise partnerships overseen by the DTPC. The formal inauguration was held on September 12, 2024, by MP Kodikunnil Suresh, in the presence of MLA M.S. Arunkumar and Panchayat President G. Venu.

🛡️ Ecological Safeguards & Governance

To protect the delicate water ecosystem, a specialized Panchayat-level monitoring committee enforces strict structural guidelines to completely prevent practices hazardous to the environment.

The project runs with full technical coordination from the Haritha Keralam Mission, environmental activists, and local residents to guarantee sustainable, zero-plastic footprint compliance.

  • Biological Control: Rearing Carp fish to naturally counter and regulate seasonal algae growth.
