Mavelikara Thamarakulam Grama Panchayat • Onattukara Region

🌍

Topography & Soil Profile

Located at the southeastern tip of the historic Onattukara region in Central Travancore, Thamarakulam possesses a dynamic terrain characterized by distinctive red sandstone formations and varying elevations sloping progressively westward.

⛰️ Eastern Highlands High-elevation zone covered predominantly with hard red sandstone. Notably, 15% of this terrain consists of laterite plateaus with exposed rocky outcroppings that naturally restrict extensive agriculture.
📉 Central Slopes A transitional, moderately sloping terrain defined by highly fertile, very deep soft red sandstone-rich soils that transition smoothly toward the lowlands.
🌾 Western Lowlands The lowest geographic zone of the village. Home to expansive, low-lying alluvial spaces and deep clay-covered surfaces optimized for heavy cultivation.

🌿

Agricultural Ecosystem & Cash Crops

Paddy fields make up a massive one-fifth (20%) of the total land area of the Panchayat. While 2% of the soil-covered rocky highlands are successfully utilized for rice, the lowlands along both sides of Kannanakuzhi (Wards 1 and 2) host vast, contiguous networks of lush rice fields.

The Cash Crop Shift: Mirroring broader trends across Central Travancore, the village has witnessed a visible transition from traditional food crops to lucrative cash crops. The high profitability and attractive management systems of rubber cultivation have drawn substantial local investment.

🌾 Regional Crop Distribution

  • Historic Staples: Tapioca (Kappa), Yam, Cassava, Sorghum, and Potatoes.
  • Perennial Trees: Coconut, Rubber, Mango, Kamuk (Areca Nut), and Cashew.
  • Spices & Pulses: Pepper, Ginger, Turmeric, Lentils, Urad Dal, and Muthira.
  • High/Lowlands: Betel leaves, Local Vegetables, and Banana plantations.

🌊 Flowing Streams An interconnected web of local streams measuring 22.5 km in total length winds continuously through multiple wards of the Panchayat.
🏺 Historical Chirakkals 7 functional structural reservoirs (Chirakkals) are preserved along the outskirts alongside numerous privately held farm ponds.

Educational Genesis & Historic Landmarks

Before localized high schools were established, students from Thamarakulam regularly undertook strenuous commutes to adjacent towns like Vallikunnam, Kattanam, Mavelikkara, and Kayamkulam. Today, the village features a highly advanced, self-sufficient institutional landscape.

1911 — Chathiyara L.P. School (The First Institutional Milestone)

Founded initially as a private school by local visionary Narayana Pillai, it paved the path for public literacy before successfully evolving into a premier government institution.

1918 — Charummood St. Mary's School to V.V. High School

Initiated as an Lower Primary desk in 1918. Through dedicated upgrades, it transformed into the celebrated V.V. High School, holding its rank today as the largest high school campus in the entire area.

1956 - 1964 — Post-Independence Expansion

The local Upper Primary School was established in 1956, and rapidly expanded into a fully functional High School by 1964, anchoring secondary education inside village boundaries.
