History of Grama Panchayat
The Kallukulam and Nangarikkel ponds in Kokkakattussery and the Koovelichira, Uzhalichira, Vaiyankarachira and Koduvirachira in the sixth ward are sources of water that never run dry. Wards 3, 4 and 5 are low-lying plateaus filled with red sandstone and clay. The western region is the lowest area of this village. Vast paddy fields are adjacent to both sides of the first and second wards of this panchayat, Kannanakuzhi. The soil type found here is hard rocky hills and clay-covered clay-covered surface that are clearly visible in the eastern regions. The soil found here is very deep clay-covered clay-covered soil with a clay-covered surface. In this very fertile soil, trees like coconut, rubber, and kamuk, spices like pepper, ginger, and turmeric, legumes like lentils, urad dal, and mutira, tubers like kappa, yam, and yam, and bananas are cultivated in abundance. The fields of the village constitute one-fifth of the total area. The shift from food crops to cash crops is clearly visible in this panchayat as well. The profit from rubber cultivation and the attractive farming system have led to the migration of farmers to this area. Years ago, the main crop in this village was kappa. In addition, yam, yam, yam, and potatoes were cultivated as intercrops. Banana and pulses were cultivated on the dry land. The 22.5 km long river that flows through various parts of the panchayat. The surface water sources in this panchayat are long streams, 7 existing streams outside the panchayat, and ponds owned by individuals.
Education: Chattiyara L.P. School was the first school to be established in the panchayat. This school was established in 1911 by a Keralan named Narayana Pillai, but it soon became a government school. Similarly, Charummood St. Mary's School, established in 1918, is an L.P. School. It later became the famous V.V. High School. Today, it is the largest high school in the area. U.P. School, established in 1956, became a high school in 1964. Before these two high schools came into existence, people from Thamarakulam used to go to Vallikunnam, Kattanam, Mavelikkara and Kayamkulam to pursue high school education. A person from Thamarakulam even got an IAS. The first person from Kerala who belonged to the Muslim community got an IAS was P.S. Haveev Muhammad, a resident of Thamarakulam. St. Mary's English Medium School is located in the third ward and Navajyothi English School is located in the tenth ward. This school was founded in 1918 by Bishop Lawrence Perera under the Kollam Diocese.
Basic Areas: There is a Public Health Centre in Thamarakulam Grama Panchayat, which started functioning in 1982 in a rented building at Thekkayat in Chathiyara ward, and a hospital attached to Nooradu Sanatorium in this panchayat. Nooradu Leprosy Sanatorium was established in 1934 for the sole purpose of housing and treating leprosy patients. Being a village located on the southern side of the Kayamkulam-Punalur road, the panchayat has been able to make significant progress in terms of transportation in recent times. In the past, about 500 workers from this area worked in the Cashew Development Corporation factories set up in nearby places like Panayil and Karimulakkal. One industrial estate has been established for the panchayat as per the industrialization scheme implemented by the government in the year 1977.
